It’s Not About You

“It’s Not About You” picks up the late-’90s and early-’00s pop-rock relay baton without tripping over the nostalgia.

The West Midlands trio understands the practical architecture of that era: a rhythm section that gets moving immediately, guitars that can carry grit and melody at the same time, and a chorus designed to be remembered before the second pass. Producer Andy Taylor—known for work with Editors and The Twang—keeps the presentation crisp, but the polish never buries the band’s live experience.

Semisonic and Fountains of Wayne are useful coordinates here. DINKY shares their respect for hooks that sound effortless only because somebody did the construction work. The vocal enters cleanly, the guitar lines keep the verses in motion, and the chorus opens wide enough for a room to join in.

The road test is simple: put it through car speakers with the windows down. The track has enough rhythmic push to survive traffic, enough melodic clarity to cut through wind, and a refrain likely to return when the radio is off. The live-room test should go just as well; this is a song built to hand part of the chorus to the crowd.

The important thing is that DINKY does not stop at period accuracy. “It’s Not About You” uses familiar pop-rock mechanics to state the band’s current identity. Nostalgia supplies the map. The hook gets the song where it needs to go.
